A majority of the panel that advises Minnesota regulators on environmental justice submitted their “collective and public resignation” Monday over the state’s approval of a controversial oil pipeline project.

Twelve of the 17 members of the Environmental Justice Advisory Group quit, stating they “cannot continue to legitimize and provide cover for the MPCA’s war on Black and brown people,” according to the AP.

Last week, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency approved a key water permit allowing Enbridge to build its 340-mile Line 3 oil pipeline across the state, including across 40 watersheds where wild rice grows — a sacred food for the Ojibwe people.
