This governor could shut down a Great Lakes oil pipeline that carries 23 million gallons daily

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer revoked an easement Friday that allows Enbridge to operate an oil pipeline under the environmentally ultra-sensitive Straits of Mackinac between the state’s Lower and Upper Peninsulas.

The Line 5 pipeline (actually two pipelines both 20 inches in diameter) moves about 23 million gallons daily of crude oil from western Canada to refineries in the U.S. and Ontario and lays beneath a major shipping lane where it is vulnerable to anchor strikes.

A leak from the pipeline could be devastating for nearly the entire Great Lakes system as strong currents in the straits could carry oil hundreds of miles, polluting Michigan beaches and dunes and fouling one of the planet’s largest sources of freshwater.
