The Cameron Peak Fire in northern Colorado, which began August 13th, exploded this week and is now the state’s largest wildfire on record.

The fire consumed more than 30,000 acres between late Tuesday and early Thursday, driven by extremely high winds. At more than 164,000 acres burned, the Cameron Peak Fire is now substantially larger than the Pine Gulch Fire, which burned more than 139,000 acres earlier this summer and held the record for the state’s largest fire for an entire three months. Climate change, caused by extracting and burning fossil fuels, is making wildfires more destructive.
