The clean energy transition is accelerating despite the coronavirus pandemic and economic downturn, according to a new report from America’s Pledge.

The group said America’s cities, states and businesses have not been impeded in their ability to deliver climate action in five key areas: electricity, transportation, buildings, methane, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The analysis finds that expanded bottom-up action from these cities, states, and businesses — bolstered by shifting public opinion and favorable market forces — make the U.S. clean energy transition inevitable.

While increased non-federal action can reduce U.S. emissions up to 37% by 2030, however, the report notes the U.S. could achieve climate goals much faster with federal stimulus programs that support clean infrastructure, fund public transit and local governments, and invest in low-income and impacted communities.
