Orange smoke blotted out the sun and made the Bay Area and parts of Oregon look more like Mars than Earth Wednesday as wildfires fueled by climate change engulfed the region.

The smoke was so thick it forced the National Weather Service to abandon its modeling and rely on Twitter for updates. “We just have so much smoke over us right now,” the Bay Area NWS tweeted.

“This is beyond the scope of our models so we rely on your reports!” Various atmospheric conditions caused much of the smoke to be suspended high above the ground, creating a situation where street-level air quality was rated as “moderate,” but officials warned smoke particles were likely to descend later in the day.
