Heavy rainfall in Sydney, Australia over the weekend helped extinguish long-lasting fires in the area but also caused power outages, flash flood warnings, and overflowing dams.

Authorities said more than 15 inches of rain fell on the city over four days—more than three times the average for February, and the highest rainfall in 20 years.

89,000 customers remained without power Sunday and residents in low-lying areas were forced to evacuate.

The rain has helped firefighters extinguish more than 30 long-lasting fires, and authorities say that more rain this week could help put out nearly all the fires burning in the area.
