President Trump and his chief propagandist Sean Hannity really, really don’t want former national security adviser John Bolton to testify in the Senate impeachment hearings.
On his radio show, Fox News host Sean Hannity threatened Senate Republicans: “They now get to present their case to all of you Republican senators, don’t make me start giving out the phone number.” The petty nature of the threat shows how desperately Hannity doesn’t want new witnesses like Bolton to testify.
Meanwhile, Trump told Laura Ingraham in an interview on Friday that he was going to block Bolton from testifying, using executive privilege.
“You can’t be in the White House as president — future, I’m talking about future, many future presidents — and have a security adviser, anybody having to do with security, and legal and other things,” he said to Ingraham, in response to a question about Bolton’s testimony.
She asked, “You’re going to invoke executive privilege?”
“Especially — well, I think you have to. For the sake of the office,” Trump answered.
One thing one thing we know about Trump—he’s never done anything “for the sake of the office” or for the sake of anything or anyone other than himself (and, occasionally, his children). So the fact that he is offering such a transparently BS explanation shows how panicky and desperate he is.
Hannity had some other advice for the Senate. “They’re just obsessed and Nancy Pelosi needed to appease the radicalism rising within her base,” he said of the House. “That is not what your role is in the U.S. Senate. Your role is also very, very clear: You are to run the trial. That’s it. That’s what your job is. It is not your job, at all, to redo their corrupt investigation.”
Former Fox News chief political correspondent Carl Cameron — now chief political correspondent at Front Page Live — called Hannity’s protection of Trump “snake oil.”
Bolton has offered to testify if subpoenaed.
