Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro last week falsely accused actor Leonardo DiCaprio of funding fires being set in the Amazon, with seemingly no basis or evidence.
During remarks in front of the presidential residence Friday, Bolsonaro appeared to reference social media posts linking the World Wildlife Fund to plots to set fires in order to drum up donations.
“This Leonardo DiCaprio is a cool guy, right? Giving money to torch the Amazon,” Bolsonaro said.
DiCaprio, a noted climate activist, responded in a statement that the WWF was “worthy of support” but he had not donated to the “organizations targeted” by the president.
The Brazilian government last week arrested four members of the civilian group Alter do Chão Fire Brigade. Plus, officials raided the office of the Projeto Saudé e Alegria, an ally of the fire brigade, accusing them of setting fires.
Bolsonaro continues to blame fires in the Amazon on NGOs and international governments.
