Hill, Pelosi, Yovanovitch and more: Impeachment’s heroes are heroines

11/22/2019 1:45 pm ET Dara Brewton

Impeachment’s heroes are heroines

Women have become the heroes of the Trump impeachment proceedings, a big change from all of the high-profile hearings done in the past. Namely, because their roles in the process have absolutely nothing to do with gender.

The women showcasing their talent and intellect range from civil servants all the way to the Speaker of the House.

Fiona Hill

Fiona Hill is an American foreign affairs specialist, top Russia expert, and a former official at the National Security Council. She testified on Thursday regarding her concerns about Trump’s Ukraine policy.

In addition, she stressed that the spread of an already discredited conspiracy theory about Ukraine meddling in the 2016 election benefits Russia.

In her opening statement, Hill said, “I have no interest in advancing the outcome of your inquiry in any particular direction, except toward the truth.”

Marie Yovanovitch

Maria Yovanovitch is an American diplomat who has served in a variety of posts within the State Department. She worked as the Ambassador to Ukraine until Trump recalled her from the post in May.

She testified before the committee last Friday while Trump was publicly bashing her on Twitter.

The founder of the Women’s Foreign Policy Network, Jenna Ben-Yehuda,  called Yovanovitch’s testimony a “master class in integrity-led leadership.”

Jennifer Williams

Jennifer Williams has served under three presidents, and she has served the Trump administration as the special advisor of European and Russian affairs to Vice President Mike Pence. She was testified on Monday because she was one of the people listening in on Trump’s infamous call with President Zelensky.

Williams was the first person from “Trump’s camp” to testify publicly in the impeachment proceedings.

Laura Cooper

Laura Cooper is the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russian, Ukrainian, and Eurasian affairs. Her testimony implicates that Ukraine was aware the aid was stalled much earlier than the White House initially claimed.

Val Demings

Val Demings is a Democratic Representative from Florida’s 10th congressional district, and she was the first woman to serve as chief of police in Orlando.

She pressed Ambassador Sondland for details during his testimony on Wednesday.

Jackie Speier

Jackie Speier is a Democratic Representative from California’s 14th Congressional district, a seat she has held since 2008. In 1978, Speier was shot five times while on a congressional trip to visit the Jim Jones cult in Guyana, South America.

According to CS Monitor, Speier “played a key role in the depositions of Ambassador Taylor and State Department official George Kent.” She also dropped the epic “five Pinocchios” line during Sondland’s testimony.

Terri Sewell

Terri Sewell is serving her fifth term as a Democratic Representative from Alabama’s 7th Congressional District. She was the first black woman to be elected to Congress from her state.

Sewell has been a tough interrogator throughout the impeachment process.

Nancy Pelosi

It can be said that the entire Impeachment inquiry hinges on the fortitude of one woman: Nancy Pelosi. The first woman to ever serve as Speaker of the House, she is a Democratic Representative from California’s 12th district.

She famously said, “all roads lead to Putin.” And she has been “standing up” to Trump despite his constant attacks and name-calling.

Olivia Perez-Cubas, a spokesperson for the Winning For Women action Fund discussed the strength of the women leading the charge in the Impeachment inquiry, “If for nothing else, they’ve proven that women on the left and the right are asking the tough questions, and are getting answers.”
