Twitter’s new policy against political ads may allow sponsored tweets from oil and gas companies to continue to appear. These sponsored posts would be allowed while Twitter is simultaneously banning ads from environmental organizations.
Emily Atkin, a former New Republic writer who now writes the newsletter Heated, reported about this inconsistency on Tuesday. She wrote in the newsletter that Twitter does not currently label certain ads from ExxonMobil as political issue ads.
These non-political tweets include encouraging readers to watch a video to “understand the real story behind #ExxonKnew and learn what actions [Exxon is] taking to address climate change.”
A Twitter spokesperson told Atkin new rules around the policy would come out next week.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) highlighted Atkin’s investigation and called for “accountability” from the company.
