Thousands of scientists from more than 150 countries are sounding an urgent alarm on the climate crisis. They warn of “untold suffering” for millions if “major transformations” in the way we live do not occur.

A statement published Tuesday describes science’s “moral obligation to clearly warn humanity of any catastrophic threat.” It has been endorsed by more than 11,000 scientists from around the world.

The climate emergency is “closely linked to excessive consumption of the wealthy lifestyle,” the statement says. Resolution can only come through drastic changes.

These changes include ending fossil fuel extraction, curbing population growth, and reducing meat consumption.
