The United Nations wants to greet Swedish teen climate activist on her arrival in New York with 17 sailboats. Each of them stands for one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and is provided with a corresponding symbol on the sail, the United Nations said. Accordingly, the boats will wait for the racing yacht “Malizia II” with Thunberg on board near the Verrazano Bridge spanning the straits between Staten Island and Brooklyn.
The Sustainability Goals are considered the global purpose of the United Nations and its member states. In addition to the enhanced fight against climate change, they include preventing people from living in poverty or starving, improving access to education and health, or eliminating discrimination against women. The goals are to be achieved by 2030. In September, the heads of state and government want to draw an interim report on what has been achieved so far at the UN in New York.
At 4:01 am Greta Thunberg tweeted; ” Land!! The lights of Long Island and New York City ahead.”
You can follow the progress of the yacht “Malizia II” on a live interactive map. At 6:00 am the crew had only 20 miles left to sail after over 14 days of transatlantic sailing.
“…I’d love to see some of the cosseted, paunchy men who have attacked Thunberg in the press put up with even an hour of this..” @JeremyCliffe
