Chinese actor Simu Liu, just cast in Marvel’s first Asian-led superhero film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is facing down the haters with extraordinary class.
When a reporter asked people on the streets of Beijing if Lui is “too ugly” by Chinese standards to be in a Marvel movie, Liu graciously turned the insult on its head.
Responding with smarts and class, he called it a “very teachable moment.”
Though “second-guessed at every single possible step of my career,” Liu says he hasn’t given up.
Three things help him power even through naysayers: his singular focus, belief in his own abilities, and his refusal “to let the opinions of others define me.”
