Three coal-related operations, including a power plant that became a rallying point for President Trump’s bailout efforts, announced they would close last week as the industry continues its downward slide.

In Pennsylvania, utility giant FirstEnergy said it would shutter its Bruce Mansfield coal-fired plant in November, nearly two years ahead of schedule. The plant, which employs 200 workers, found a major supporter in coal magnate and plant supplier Robert Murray, who aggressively lobbied the Trump administration to create a national plan to save the plant and the industry at large.

Meanwhile, Kentucky miner Cambrian Coal LLC, which employs nearly 700 people at three mines, filed for bankruptcy last week, and Alliance Resource Partners said it would close a mine employing 200 due to “weak market conditions.”
