Germany will freeze funds it sends to Brazil to help preserve the Amazon in light of mounting reports that deforestation is rising under President Jair Bolsonaro, German and Brazilian media reported this weekend.

German officials confirmed this weekend to newspaper Der Tagesspiegel that it would pause 35 million euros (around $39.6 million) it sends in aid to Brazil annually until the government has more clarity on how and why deforestation is increasing.

Norway, the top contributor to Brazil’s Amazon Fund, which was created to combat deforestation, has also threatened to pause funding or significantly reduce its support.

“Brazil doesn’t need” the money, Bolsonaro, whose administration has questioned the efficacy of deforestation reduction programs, told journalists on Sunday.
