In a speech given after a weekend marked by two deadly mass shootings, the president said, “We must shine light on the dark recesses of the internet, and stop mass murders before they start.”

The “racist hate” that Trump referred to is clearly displayed in his own reelection campaign ads that have been posted to Facebook and Twitter. In fact, the Trump campaign has created ads using the word “invasion” when talking about the migrants seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border more than 2,000 times. Those Facebook and Twitter ads have been viewed millions of times, and Trump’s campaign has paid thousands of dollars to promote them. One such ad had copy that read:

“We have an INVASION! So we are BUILDING THE WALL to STOP IT. Dems will sue us. But we want a SAFE COUNTRY! It’s CRITICAL that we STOP THE INVASION.”

The language used in the El Paso shooters online manifesto was “consumed by racist hate” as Trump said in his speech, but the terminology written by the shooter was reflective of the very same language used in Trump’s campaign ads. The shooter claimed his “attack” was in response to the “Hispanic invasion of Texas.”

Trump won’t have to shine his light very far to find the source of the internet’s “dangerous avenue” that is radicalizing “disturbed minds.”
